Fantastic
Reviewer: "martinbamford2"

I bought a copy of this book and spent an hour reading it last night and another hour on the train home today. Fantastic! I'm a big fan of business and 'success' books but this is the first one I have ever felt entirely comfortable reading. The tone that Richard has managed to create makes it feel like I was sitting in seat 1B and taking part on that conversation, learning valuable lessons during the flight.

Essential reading for all emerging entrepreneurs
Reviewer: A reader

Having already made the decision to move out of the corporate rat race and make it on my own, Millionaire Upgrade gave me the entrepreneurial toolkit to make a real go of it. The fact that the book was the culmination of extensive interviews with many of the top UK entrepreneurs gave me a confidence in its approach and content. Over the course of the book I began to readdress many of my long standing beliefs including those about failure, luck and persistence, by the end of the book I knew what I had to do and couldn't wait to do it!

Really good value
Reviewer: A reader

Half the problem in starting and running a business is keeping your eyes on the 'big picture' - what you're trying to achieve and where you're going.

'The Millionaire Upgrade', and the audio series it accompanies, 'The Millionaire MBA', uses the real-life experience of successful entrepreneurs to look at the key factors in finding and staying on course.

This isn't some hyped-up emotion-building dream-selling 'motivational' book. It's good, honest advice from people that know.

The Real Deal: Think and Grow Rich Updated as an Entrepreneurial Fable Based on an Airline Business Class Conversation
Reviewer: Donald Mitchell "Founder of The Billionaire Entrepreneurs' Master Mind -- (a Strategic Management professor, author and consultant in Boston)

What could you learn from spending eight hours talking with a successful entrepreneur? Millionaire Upgrade provides an armchair version of that experience.

Many business fables don't quite hit the mark. Some fables portray key concepts in such a general way that you aren't sure what lesson you're supposed to draw. Other fables feature such ridiculous situations that it's hard to take them seriously. A few fables are too complicated.

I usually find business fables to be most effective when the situation they describe resonate as being like something I've experienced, the advice reminds me of key lessons I wish someone had taught me when I was younger, and I come away with new insights I didn't have before.

By those standards, Millionaire Upgrade is a clear winner that will help you break through to the right entrepreneurial mind set to accomplish great things.

Let me share more about my reactions before describing the book's contents. I've had conversations in first class on airplanes like the one described in this book, both as the person providing and receiving the advice. I treasure those memories. In these days when more and more leaders only travel on their own planes, it's harder and harder to gain this kind of experience. It seemed appropriate to encapsulate the experience into a business fable for that reason, if for no other.

I also teach entrepreneurs. The hardest point to get across is how fascination, passion, perseverance, fresh thinking, exciting others and putting the right team together are critical elements to superior entrepreneurial results. Everyone smiles at me when I talk about those factors, but I can tell they usually haven't absorbed the lesson as deeply as they need to.

I have spent a lot of time interviewing top entrepreneurs. When you do, you get a sense of the person that's like the entrepreneur in this fable. Richard Parkes Cordock has done a great service in capturing those qualities of quiet, but never-ending, focus in his character of Michael. Undoubtedly, the dozens of interviews he had with successful entrepreneurs gave him that accurate reading of their characters and habits.

I also liked that the concept behind the fable was based loosely on a real incident where Jason Murphy, a member of the author's family, was upgraded to sit next to Sir Richard Branson in seat 1B where the peripatetic entrepreneur did indeed provide advice.

Finally, this book provided a very effective mnemonic device to help remind me of the book's lessons. Many fables try to do that, and I can remember neither the mnemonic nor its lessons by the end of the book. This one sticks well. Nice!

Here's a quick overview of the book. Tom has procrastinated in getting ready for a flight to do a dirty job. All of that delay makes him almost miss the flight. He's the last one to board and finds himself upgraded to business class in seat 1B after the occupant of 1A gives up the seat he had reserved for an assistant who didn't join the trip. 1A notices that Tom has a copy of Think and Grow Rich with him. They start conversing. 1A turns out to be Michael Redford, a successful entrepreneur (whose history shows some parallels to Sir Richard Branson's).

Through the eight brief chapters, Mr. Cordock introduces the concepts behind "I believe . . . [to a} t" which is the mnemonic device I mentioned earlier. It's a good device in part because "I believe" is the essence of the kind of positive thinking that helps entrepreneurs to accomplish.

I don't think it's fair to reveal what all of these lesson are, but you deserve a couple of examples of my favorites:

One of the e's stands for "expect failure." That may sound like the opposite of positive thinking, but most entrepreneurs succeed because they are prepared to survive and learn from potential failures. Often those who have the most failures in the beginning have the largest successes later on.

Another e is "enjoy hard work." I was thinking of that point yesterday when a young medical assistant advised me to stop working so I could enjoy life. Surprised, I said to her that I really liked what I was doing and didn't want to give my work up. She was speechless. It was a new thought for her.

Do you want to succeed as an entrepreneur? Read and apply this book!

I BELIEVE
Reviewer: Peter Chapman (London, United Kingdom)

I completed Richard’s Millionaire MBA Mentoring Programme 2 years ago just as I was starting my own software business. Having worked for other software companies and having had the employee mindset for 17 years, I needed the guidance of some successful UK entrepreneurs who had been in my position and who had made the transition that I wanted to make. I needed to acquire the Millionaire Mindset.

Millionaire MBA delivered everything I wanted and more. There is nothing quite like hearing real-life stories and opinions from the entrepreneurs themselves, in their own words. When you hear what they did, what they’ve been through and how they think, it certainly gives you the confidence, inspiration and belief that if you follow the same guidelines and adopt the same mindset you too can achieve the same results. It’s very down-to-earth with no hype, just good, solid guidance on how it’s really done.

Millionaire Upgrade is an excellent introduction to this mindset, and the IBELIEVE mnemonic is an excellent way of keeping it in the front of your mind (as an extra reminder I now have a framed copy of it on my desk!). Very succinct, easy to understand messages wrapped up in an enjoyable story where you can imagine yourself as the character Tom (I certainly did).

How to Upgrade Your Mindset
Reviewer: Robert Morris (Dallas, Texas)

Frankly, I did not know quite what to expect as I began to read this book. There are already so many in print whose titles include “millionaire” and which purport to offer “secrets,” “keys,” etc. to the accumulation of wealth. After having read several of them, I still retain my high regard for others published long ago, such as Benjamin Franklin’s Autobiography, Russell H. Conwell’s Acres of Diamonds, Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, and Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. That said, I soon realized that Millionaire Update is worthy of inclusion with those four.

Only in recent years have the unique benefits of the business narrative been properly recognized. Much of the credit for this is shared by authors such as John Seely Brown (Storytelling in Organizations: Why Storytelling Is Transforming 21st Century Organizations and Management), Stephen Denning (The Springboard: How Storytelling Ignites Action in Knowledge-Era Organizations and The Leader's Guide to Storytelling: Mastering the Art and Discipline of Business Narrative), Doug Lipman (Improving Your Storytelling, and Annette Simmons (The Story Factor: Inspiration, Influence, and Persuasion Through the Art of Storytelling).

Now let’s focus on this book. Here’s the situation. A hurried and harried business executive named Tom almost misses a critically important airline flight but, through the generosity of another business executive named Michael (who had purchased two tickets in business class but needed only one), sits next to him and the conversation which follows provides the narrative for Millionaire Update. As Richard Parkes Cordock explains in the XXX, this fictional situation is based on what once happened when one of his relatives, Jason Murphy, found himself seated next to Sir Richard Branson on an airline flight. Cordock also suggests that Michael represents both Branson and Sir Tom Hunter. Moreover, the wisdom which Michael shares with Tom also reflects what Cordock learned during his interviews of Branson, XXX, and more than 50 other other wealthy entrepreneurs. As for Tom, he is “loosely based” on Cordock

It would a disservice to those who read this brief commentary as well as to Cordock to discuss any of the most important revelations during Tom’s extended conversation with Michael. However, I can suggest that what Cordock shares can help many (if not most) of his readers to answer questions such as these:

1. What do I really, really want from life?

2. What do I want to be?

3. What do I really want to achieve?

4. Am I prepared to shape my life to ultimately achieve my goal?

Years ago, Rod Steiger was asked if he was often asked for advice about how to succeed as an actor. “Oh yeh, sure sure sure, many times. And I always ask, ‘Do you want to be an actor...or do you [begin italics] have [end italics] to be an actor?’ The longer it takes to answer my question, the less likely that person will succeed.”

With all due respect to this and other thought-provoking books which provide valuable insights, the fact remains that many people have what Jeffrey Pfeffer and Robert Sutton characterize as a “knowing-doing gap” in that they know what they must do to achieve success (however defined) but, for whatever reasons, are unwilling and/or unable to do whatever must be done.

Point is, Cordock and other authors do all they can to help their readers to understand themselves and their circumstances better but, ultimately and obviously, it is insufficient merely to possess knowledge. As Yoda explained to Luke Skywalker, “Do or do not, there is no try.” For those who read Millionaire Update, what Cordock shares can be quite valuable...but only if they then apply what they learn while remaining patient as well as persistent during what is certain to be a very difficult period of personal growth. It all begins with upgrading a self-limiting mindset.

Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Michael Ray’s The Highest Goal, Bill George’s Authentic Leadership, Jim O’Toole’s Creating the Good Life, David Whyte’s The Heart Aroused, and David Maister’s Practice What You Preach. Also two books by Tom Butler-Bowdon, 50 Success Classics and 50 Self-Help Classics, which provide an excellent introduction to a number of other books which also offer valuable insights.

I would strongly urge anyone who really wants to set up their own business, but has those limiting beliefs in the back of their mind that keep stopping them from doing it, to read Millionaire Upgrade and then do the Millionaire MBA Programme. It is highly likely to have a massive, positive effect on your life as it has with mine.

There's nothing more successful than success
Reviewer: Suzan St Maur

As an author and writing coach/consultant I was fortunate enough to be involved in early discussions about this book and I can't say how pleased I am that it has come to fruition. There's nothing that succeeds better than success, and that's exactly what this imaginative work is based on; the how-I-did-it advice of a number of highly successful entrepreneurs.

However unlike so many business books today, here there is not a hint of dry theory anywhere. Using the current mode of "story telling" as a delivery vehicle, this book unfolds its information in a friendly, easy-to-absorb fashion. Essential reading for any wannabe entrepreneur - and existing business barons and baronesses will learn a lot from it too.

Upgrade your thoughts
Reviewer: Sandy (Maidenhead, Berks United Kingdom)

This book takes concepts and beliefs that we have probably all heard of before but makes them easily accessible to modern-day readers. Some of this has already been written about in "Think and Grow Rich", but personally I found Napoleon Hill's style out-dated and dry. "Millionaire Upgrade" will refresh those ideas for the present day and add a lot more besides. All the key points are repeated at the end of each chapter to reinforce the message, and to motivate us to get up and just do it with passion! A valuable book which I would recommend to all budding entrepreneurs.

I Am a Believer!
Reviewer: Mrs S C Terpilowski

Unfortunately I didn’t have a seat in first class on a plane, when I was reading this book, just passenger class on London Underground.

I found the book easy to read and it kept me really interested right to the end. Having read many business books, I really liked the style of writing - eavesdropping on two people’s conversations – which kept it simple to follow and answered some of the thoughts I had, as you were taken through various the stages. The summary at the end of each chapter giving the key points encourage you to explore the issues raised for yourself.

The business principles stressed in this book are differently phrased to all other books I have read and this meant that I had to really think about the subjects from a different perspective. You are certainly left with lots of very good thoughts and stimulations to help you open your mind to thinking and acting differently, as you take your millionaires journey.

Looking forward to meeting all the other readers one day in a First Class Airport Lounge, where we are all sharing our own stories of success and how we are going to help the next generations of millionaires to reach their goals. Richard name the airport and the date – you have to set goals!!

Solid, down to earth advice in an entertaining format
Reviewer: "wfc3" - See all my reviews

This book is in the mould of 'The Goal' by Goldratt & Cox and 'The Art of Profitability' by Slywotzky where a young man is given useful business advice by an older, very successful mentor. I found it easy to listen to (I have the MP3 version) and was sufficiently engaged to hear it straight through.
The advice is on entrepreneurship and is delivered during a long haul flight to a young corporate IT man who has had the good fortune to be upgraded to Business Class (thus the title).

I liked the idea of linking each theme to a letter of a mnemonic, 'I believe' which the mentor uses; it makes it easier to remember the themes than the '7 ways of this' or the '12 steps to that'.

The advice is well structured and sound, and throws up some ideas which may challenge the way you think about what it takes to make it as your own boss.

The book can be looked upon as an introduction to the ideas in the author's 'Millionaire MBA' course and is based upon his meetings with many of the UKs most successful entrepreneurs.

All in all, an entertaining and stimulating read.

Essential skills for all entrepreneurs
Reviewer: "richpeterz"

The author has a fantastic skill of bringing all the various elements of personal achievement together under 1 excellent book. Once you start with this there is no turning back (I only received it yesterday!) I have studied personal achievement for a few months now and nobody else brings it together as well as Richard, it is truly unique and will no doubt become a classic as time moves on.

Once you have studied this book you should move on to the authors Millionaire MBA course. At my time of writing I've completed the first 4 weeks of Millionaire MBA and have learnt so many insightful lessons, it has changed my outlook on life. I have lots of business ideas and don’t seem to sleep as much anymore! I’m constantly thinking about my ideas and the principles in the book and course. I've already started working on my idea and have set my goal of going live as the 31/12/06, and I have no doubt I will achieve it and be successful.

The Haynes Manual To Business Success
Reviewer: tommie hayward

Based on the authors own research, and development of Millionaire MBA(.com) this book explains the strategies and mindset of successful entrepreneurs in a clear and engaging style
A worthy upgrade for you and your business!

Like many good books this is inspired by actual events (with Richard Branson of all people),If you thought millionaires are a breed apart think again.

It uses the story of a meeting between Tom an employee of a software company, soon to be made redundant, and Michael a successful entrepreneur and how chance events brought them to be seated side by side.

Michael notices Tom reading a self help book,(Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich) and this, causes Michael to engage Tom in conversation.

Michael then over the course of the flight explain the strategies and style of thinking he uses, explaining the difference between an employee's mindset and that of a successful business person, with Tom taking notes along the way.

I have read many business books ,but the clear difference here is the light tone and engaging way it is written, I found it difficult to put down.

There's even a handy acronym, I Believe ,with each letter having it's own chapter, I found the section on goals helped me identify where I have been going wrong, and what I need to do to correct this, at the end of each chapter there is also a section on the notes made by Tom tohelp him and us ,understand and reinforce Michaels teachings.

Michael although clearly appreciating the trappings of success, reveals that he was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth, this made it easy to identify with him.

Tom is also a character we can all relate to being victim to external demands, unable to do his job to a standard he believes in, the reason for his flight being to do his bosses dirty work and help close down a plant overseas.

This book could be the glue that brings together and clarifies everything some of what you may have read elsewhere but didn't quite get, or wasn't as clearly explained as it is here.
The whole style of the book is light and easy to read and understand unlike many business books, it’s more like a Haynes success manual for business.

There’s no la-la land touchy feely stuff here, just useable down to earth advice.

So if you are starting a new business, or expanding an existing one ,or are involved in any way in the corporate world, this book is a should and indeed a must read.

There are timeless lessons here and I will pick up Millionaire Upgrade quite often to re read certain sections ,and reinforce the lessons.

A great read for new and seasoned entrepreneurs
Reviewer: "kevindavies17"

A fantastic read. I couldn't help but read it cover to cover in one session!

The set of rules clearly defines the mindset of a self-made millionaire entrepreneur, and offers solid ideas on how each element needs to be achieved.

This book would be great for someone who is planning to leave the corporate world - but also provides valuable revision for seasoned entrepreneurs!

This book works through the key characteristics of successful entrepreneurs...valuable knowledge written in a no nonsense, easy to digest style...I highly recommend it.

Amazing
Reviewer: Keith Jones (Liverpool)

I have read many books which promise alot but deliver little on this subject but this is different. The way it is written allows you to see the logic behind the theory and to believe it can work for you. I think after reading this I will probably buy millionaire MBA as I have complete belief in the author and his understanding on this subject.

Potential Millionaires start here
Reviewer: MR G A L Ellis

This is a light hearted but well targeted, and easy to read, book for prospective entrepreneurs to use to get started. The book distills the key points from the authors' other succesful product, Millionaire MBA, which is an MP3 based system allowing access to over 20 hours of interviews with successsful entrepreneurs.
I highly recommend this book to anyone considering starting their own business in the very near future. It took me just a few hours to read the book from cover to cover and to re-discover some of the key drivers that made me start my own businesses.

"....just been reading your book in the last few days. As an entrepreneur, all I can say is what a brilliant read. If I had had this 18 month ago when I started my current business, life would have been a hell of a lot easier. As it is, I can now recognise 'from above' if you like, the quality and accuracy of the lessons - they are all things I am currently doing and have come to realise are vital to success. Great reading. Thanks

I'm now recommending it to everyone I meet who would benefit...

I hope all is well with you"

A complementary book for the Millionaire series
Reviewer: Philippe, from Montreal, Canada

First, I'd like to point out that I own the whole Millionaire MBA series, listened to it numerous times (and still doing so) and I really believe this series is an absolute MUST have for very serious entrepreneurs. Mastering concepts and ideas shared in the series is a long-term journey but having this knowledge and in-the-field-proven-experiences at hand, wow! what better can you ask for?

Mmm, maybe something to wrap it all up in a concise, yet full of pratical infos format. And this is where I would place Millionaire Upgrade into the picture. If I had to compare the Millionaire MBA series to bricks or building blocks, then the Millionaire Upgrade would be the mortar that holds it tight and fill the joints.

It's produced in a storytelling genre (very well told, by the way) and based on a true event. I felt that the IBELIEVE concept presented in the book is full enough of ideas to give you food for thoughts for some times.

But my take on this is that if you go for the "Upgrade", then seriously consider the whole series. They address somewhat different needs, I guess, but to me, full benefits would come from them being studied together.

MIND STRETCHING

I purchased your book at WHSmiths at a coach station I was waiting to depart from (London Victoria) - to pass thetime on the journey ahead, which was to be 6 hours!

It was the most exciting 6 hours I had ever had on such a laborious journey! I read your book from cover to cover (I even put the extra light on in the coach so I could keep reading - I just could not put it down!).

I was very inspired by your book and it was such a lovely easy read that I was sad when my journey ended and that I had finished the book, as it meant my weekend of running around had started!

Bought 10 Copies
From Singapore

Thank you indeed. I have read many of such motivational books with similar theme. However, none of them has impressed me as much as yours. Your easy style of writing and creative story board sequencing of the principles "I Believe" has certainly won my admiration.

I too shared your purpose in spread this gospel of "entrepreneur mindset" and have reaped the harvest in Singapore. I'll certainly add your perspective into my presentation and promote your book in my seminars and workshops. To date, I have bought 10 copies and given them away to my staff and friends. I would be purchasing another 10 copies to be given away to my clients.

Once again, Richard, thumbs up and a sensational job indeed. My kudos to ya.
